In 1942, the beautiful bays and beaches of the Solomon Islands experienced some fierce battles and fights as a part of the Guadalcanal Campaign. As the Allied Forces fought the Japanese out of the region, many ships, planes, submarines and even trucks and ammunition were sunk in the beautiful, clear-blue waters, creating an amazing number of artificial reefs and awe-inspiring dive sites. During this historical and wonderful SCUBA diving liveaboard trip, the great crew of the Solomons PNG Master will show you some of the best World War 2 wreck dives in the world.
To start off your trip, you will cruise to the Florida Islands, where you'll find a few interesting wreck sites around Ghavutu and Tulagi. Here you will explore both Japanese and American planes, cargo-ships, minesweepers and heavy cruisers. You will also visit some land memorial and historical sites and museums to complete the understanding of the events of the war. You will also dive the USS Minneapolis and the RNZN Moa wrecks, two fascinating vessels which played important roles in the battles.
From the Florida islands, your liveaboard dive boat will take you to Russell Islands, to dive the famous White Beach. Here you'll find a bunch of machinery and equipment, which were dumped into the ocean by the American troops before they left. As the area was a re-provisioning base, the dumped gear includes trucks, jeeps and ammunition and turns the dive into a fun treasure hunt under the sea.
Then, the cruise will leave the Russell islands and head back to the capital, Honiara. Here you will dive and explore planes, cargo ships and even a submarine. You will also have the opportunity to visit the outdoor museum, an interesting area, filled with remnants form the war.
During the week, the Solomons PNG Master will stop at a few of the smaller islands on the way to visit some local, remote villages. You can tour the local roads, go shopping for food and souvenirs or even catch a football game with the children of the islands. A wonderful way to experience the Solomon islands from above the water and below.
